How the LRF responds

Pipelines Emergency Plan

Photograph

This plan has been prepared as part of the local authority response to the Pipeline Safety Regulations (PSR) 1996. To comply with Regulation 25 of the PSR local authorities have to prepare adequate plans detailing how an emergency relating to a possible major accident hazard pipeline (MAHP) will be dealt with. The Regulations cover any pipelines conveying dangerous fluids which have the potential to cause a major accident.

Within Bedfordshire and Luton the only pipelines covered by these regulations carry natural gas above 8 bar absolute pressure – and we have identified any care homes or schools that are close by.

What you should do:

If a pipeline ruptures, the emergency services may impose an evacuation or a cordon – up to 800 metres from the incident. If you are affected by such a cordon and asked to evacuate, please follow the instructions you are given. Otherwise, 'Go in, Stay in, and Tune in'.

The emergency services and pipeline operator will work to reduce the cordon distance as soon as it is safe to do so.
