Fuel supply disruption
The fuel supply infrastructure in the UK is generally robust and future failures are unlikely. However, transmission systems are complex and failures occurring randomly, for human or technical reasons, can never be completely ruled out. The supply chain in respect of fuel is varied from oil drilling and extraction, through shipping, storage and refining into fuel that can be used to drive power stations to vehicles. All of these processes involve many logistical hurdles to overcome before we in the UK can then distribute fuel to power stations and filling stations. Events around the world such as the oil spillage in the Gulf of Mexico highlight how events on one side of the world can affect everyone.
The country has many varied suppliers of fuel and our supply chains are robust and able to deal with many different interruptions to the supply chain with no difference to the front end consumer. It is very unlikely that we will have a fuel shortage at the current time.
Fuel is integral to how the country is run therefore the Government has a National Fuel Plan ready to be implemented should there be any serious disruption to the supply chain for whatever reason. The Bedfordshire and Luton Local Resilience Forum has used the national plan as a template to ensure that as a county we are well placed to deal with any shortages.
