Energy supply disruption

Handy tips during a power cut

  • Switch off all your electrical equipment, except one light which will let you know when the power comes back on.
  • Keep all your curtains and furniture away from heaters so there is no risk of a fire when your electricity supply comes back.
  • Try not to use candles unless they are fixed in some way to a china or metal saucer. Don't use plastic saucers. Keep candles away from flammable materials like curtains. NEVER leave lit candles in unoccupied rooms.
  • Never move a bottled gas or oil heater when it is lit.
  • Keep all heaters away from draughts - cut out draughts by drawing the curtains - but do allow some ventilation.
  • Keep a torch close to hand.
  • Keep warm by staying in one room or even in bed. Remember, your central heating boiler will not work without electricity. If you use another form of heating, use it safely.
  • Keep safe and do not open your door to strangers. EDF Energy staff always have an identity card. Make sure you see it, and if you're in doubt, phone the police right away. EDF Energy staff will always be happy for you to ring on 0845 603 9261 to check their identity. If you have registered a password with EDF Energy then ask the member of staff to ring and get the password.
  • Remember, the street lights may also be off so take care if you go out.
  • Please keep an eye on any elderly or ill people who live nearby. If you have a gas cooker, try to make sure they have some hot food or drink, even if it's just a flask of hot water.

The energy infrastructure in the UK is generally robust and future failures are unlikely. However, transmission systems are complex and failures occurring randomly, for human or technical reasons, can never be completely ruled out.

A green approach to your energy needs can increase your resilience as well as that of the energy network. This means installing loft insulation, cavity wall filling, double glazing, draught insulation for exterior doors, and energy-efficient light bulbs, and using smallscale renewable sources such as a solar heater for your hot water. In the process, you also reduce your energy bills.

Luton Borough Council has an award-winning fuel poverty programme – Affordable Warming Strategy. This information is searchable at www.luton.gov.uk.

Mid Bedfordshire District Council has an excellent webpage on how to increase energy efficiency in your home at www.midbeds.gov.uk/services/ env_services/home_environment/energy_efficiency.

Businesses should consider what will happen if they face a loss of power, fuel supply for their transport fleet, gas supply or communications over a long period as part of their business continuity plans.
